Kissing it Better

KiB on BBC Breakfast

January 2025

In December 2024, BBC Breakfast ran a Christmas story about our ‘When Great Granny Came to Stay’ workshops; designed to help children connect with their older relatives.

‘But of course, this information is invaluable all year round,’ says KiB CEO Jill Fraser. ‘By encouraging young and old to understand each other and share stories, we can help both age groups really engage with each other, so that everyone feels like a valued part of the family.’

‘Our Great Granny workshops prompt children to think about what it feels like to be old, and perhaps excluded from conversations at family gatherings because of hearing, sight or memory issues,’ says Jill. ‘After attending our workshops, the children then use their new-found understanding to connect with older relatives, as well as older people living locally.’

Once schools have taken part in a Great Granny session, KiB shows them how to make links to with local care homes to arrange regular visits; then we support them with activity packs and ideas for talking points to spark great conversations.

‘Our oldest relatives and family friends are a fantastic source of wonderful stories about life in the past,’ says Jill. ‘They have the ability to inform and entertain a much younger generation. Their stories need to be heard, and children love hearing them.’
