Every year, The Times and The Sunday Times highlight three charities that are tackling the biggest social issues of our time. This year, they’re supporting our mission to bring the generations together in an effort to reduce Britain’s loneliness crisis.
For the past 15 years, we’ve been teaching young people to be volunteers and use their talents to light up the day for older people in hospitals, care homes and the community.
“We’re honoured and delighted to be chosen for this year’s appeal,” says KiB CEO Jill Fraser. “Loneliness is such an important issue at the moment – for young people and for older ones. Our work brings the generations together in a way that benefits everyone.”
KiB started in 2009 as a way of sharing simple ideas that make the world of difference to older vulnerable people. Nowadays, we teach thousands of children and students across the country to become effective volunteers. Our primary school workshop, called When Great-Granny Came to Stay, helps young children make stronger connections with their older relatives; our courses for schools and colleges teach older students how to engage with older people by using their talents in poetry, music or the art of gentle conversation
